GAIN YOUR ARTS AWARD DISCOVER CERTIFICATE £5 to pupils at Somerset maintained schools, £10 cost to other participants.
Have your log ready! If you need help filling in your log from a grown up, that is fine, just make sure they add what you tell them!

Born in 1770, so 2020 is his 250th anniversary year
PART A – DISCOVER & TAKE PART
Watch these videos and circle the art forms you can spot on your log. Extra brownie points if you can identify some of the instruments you see and list them in the extra spaces.

This is from Beethoven’s only opera and is sung in German as he wrote it.
They are all singing about how they feel differently, some in love and some fearing they will not be loved.
Now have go at performing some Beethoven.
This is one of his most famous tunes, Ode to Joy from his 9th Symphony. It is about peace and friendship. We have added some new words.
There are three ways to take part;
1. Learn the song by using the teaching video first and the words below
2. Sign the song [click for song sheet with symbols]
3. Play some homemade percussion (e.g. the bottom of a saucepan and a wooden spoon, or a plastic bottle filled with rice to make a shaker) and see if you can keep time with the beat.

PART B – FIND OUT
His first name was Ludwig!
He was German.
He composed his first major work when he was 12!
He went deaf when he was 25 but carried on composing until he died when he was just 56.
He was born in 1770, so it is his 250th anniversary this year.
He wrote 9 symphonies (big pieces for orchestra) all of which are still famous today.
Add two things you have found out about Beethoven to your log.
