Year of Recorder
We had a very busy Spring term with some of our large scale projects for schools taking place.
The Year of Recorder 2025, the second year with this focus, was again led by internationally acclaimed recorder players Anna Stegmann and Tabea Debus, They visited 15 schools across South Somerset engaging with 3,000 children and young people, their schools’ staff and parents/carers in the associated performances. The participants learned more about the recorder (recorderS, there are lots of them!) and making music together through the telling of the story of Joshua and the Magical Flute.
Anna and Tabea also led wonderful finale concerts with groups of the schools where children playing recorders, trumpets, violins, keyboards, percussion and more performed alongside our eminent duo for audiences of family and friends!
Some of the children told us they enjoyed:
“Making raindrop sounds”
“Looking at recorders of different sizes”
“Playing in the concert”

By taking part they learned:
“To persevere”
“That we can perform even if we are a bit scared”
“To believe in yourself”
“How to have fun with recorders”
They also said:
“We want to do another performance with a different story”
“We would love to learn another instrument”
“I will continue playing the recorder”

This project was only possible because of funding from the Octagon Hub (the music hub for Somerset and Dorset) and Arts Council England.
All of our events are also supported by our Patrons and we are immensely grateful to them and all of our other funders.
