Foundation Stage Piano Summer School

with Mark Tanner

*A two-day course aimed at the adult early-stages learner – it is anticipated that course participants will not be raw beginners, i.e. the basic foundations of sitting at the instrument and playing with two hands are already underway, but there are no formal prerequisites.

Perhaps the greatest value will come from discussing and sharing approaches, ideas or even insecurities with people at a similar stage, but there will be ample opportunity to receive focused one-to-one sessions with Mark in the company of fellow course participants. You’ll come away enthused and itching to try out ideas to make the learning process an even more smooth, enjoyable journey, and Mark will also be taking you through aspects of theory and score-reading that will help in tackling new music on your own at home. This aspect will be very much on a need-to-know basis. While of course you will be encouraged to play to each other as much as you wish, there is no pressure to ‘perform’ – indeed there is much to be gained from moving your learning forwards slowly, at a pace that suits your confidence, knowledge and experience.

There will be sessions on piano technique, understanding your instrument and learning how to use your practice time effectively. There will also be discussions about repertoire choices, whether exams are a good idea for you and how you might ultimately wish to take your playing forward. For those up for a fun challenge, duets will feature during the course, and for those who prefer to improvise (any style) there will be plenty of scope to expand and grow. The course is all about taking you calmly from where you currently are to the next logical stage.

A £70 deposit is required to secure your place on this course. The balance of fees, including accommodation, is due 3 weeks before the course start date.
