2017 Review

2017 Review

12 months of activity has given us much to talk about. Our Education projects have excelled themselves, reaching thousands of children across Somerset. We’ve won Awards, reached milestones and made some wonderful music.

Jackdaws Receive the AwardWe started 2017 with our first large-scale project of the year, Year of Recorder, with Recorder virtuosi Anna Stegmann and Tabea Debus. The project told the story of “How the Wren Became King”, using music both composed and improvised on recorders of all different shapes and sizes by children from 12 schools performing en masse at Frome’s Cheese & Grain. Less than two weeks before rehearsals and school visits began, we were delighted to win Best Classical Music Education Initiative 2017 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence for the second year running  for “The Year of…” project. We continue this project in 2018 with a special Year of Brass, working with Onyx Brass Quintet; join us for the Grand Finale Concert on Tuesday 20 March 2018.

Best Classical Music Education Initiative 2017Music Teacher Awards OperaPLUSOperaPLUS (Best Classical Music Education Initiative 2016) revived the successful 2016 production of Donizetti’s The Love Potion, for the composer’s 225th anniversary year with 5 performances with schools across the length and breadth of Somerset in April and May. The humorous and light-hearted tale set on a farm in Somerset of a hopeless lover and his encounter with a trickster street doctor, was a big hit. In 2018, we stay with the work of Donizetti, this time transforming the famous La fille du Régiment into “The Team Mascot”, telling the story of rival football teams and all of the passion that brings.

Song Story focused on the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, telling his story through his music. During the project, 4 Somerset SEND Schools and one Secondary collaborated with Composer William Carslake, Violinist Flora Curzon and Soprano Saffron van Zwanenberg to create an hour-long show, spanning the composer’s child prodigy years through to the tragic unfinished Requiem, encompassing elements of his most famous works played, sung and acted by the group.

On Friday 16 June, the annual Schools Picnic at Jackdaws welcomed 100 children from 5 local schools who all performed and enjoyed a picnic in the Rose Garden. We heard singers, recorder and ukulele players, performing in mixed groups from whole classes down to solo performers. Everyone performed fantastically! Best of all, the rain held off until we had finished our lunch.

Taking the Singing Strategy out of the classroom, the Somerset Singing Festival Frome event on Thursday 13 July was directed by our wonderful singing leader Caroline Radcliffe. It was a heart-warming event, with pupils from schools across the county joining together to sing music they had learnt through the county wide Singing Strategy.

Macbeth at the Jackdaws Summer Production

Macbeth at the Jackdaws Summer Production

We closed the 16-17 academic year with the great news that the first entrants from our Friday club for young people, Jack’s Music Club, had achieved their Bronze Arts Award which they had been working towards through Jack’s. They were the first that Jackdaws have entered for the Award and will now work towards their Silver Award, as the rest of Music Club tackle their Bronze this year. Come and join us on Friday’s at 4.30pm if you want to find out more and make music with other local young people.

At the beginning of the summer holidays our intake of keen young artists were taking part in our Summer Production week. They transformed Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with music inspired by Mahler and set and costume design inspired by graphic designer David Carson.

Judges and Winners of the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards 2017

With the new academic year came The Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards 2017, which marked the 25th Award since its foundation in 1992. The winner was Mezzo-Soprano Ema Nikolovska and we were very privileged to have Mary Nelson, winner of the Award in 1995, judging the competition, alongside renowned accompanist Christopher Glynn and Soprano and Jackdaws Trustee Rosa Mannion. The audience obviously agreed with the judges as Ema won not only the First-place prize, but the Audience Prize as well.

2018

A very big year for Jackdaws as we will be celebrating our 25th birthday!

We will be marking this in a number of ways so please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for further information. Wonderfully, Onyx Brass who are leading our Year of Brass are also celebrating a 25th anniversary in 2018, so schools taking part in the project have the chance to compose a birthday fanfare which Onyx will judge and the winner will be invited to play it at our birthday party in June. There will be cake!

Arts Award LogoWe are also very excited to announce now that we are expanding our opportunities for young people with a brand new Explore the Arts Week, during half term. It will be a chance for children from ages of 7-12 to explore, learn and create using different forms of art. The aim is for the children to take their Discover or Explore Arts Awards, the entry level qualifications, over the course of the week. Get in touch for more information!

Remember that you can stay up to date with all our projects, courses and concerts by signing up to our mailing list at www.jackdaws.org.uk or subscribing at the bottom of this page.

Music and Singing Days for Wellbeing at Jackdaws

The Concerts at Jackdawsever popular One Day Courses at Jackdaws offer an ideal way for singers and musicians to try something new or to polish skills, with the help of the team of talented tutors. In a supportive and friendly environment, you could work on improving your singing voice or polishing up your guitar skills. Maybe you’d like to take the opportunity to explore how to manage performance anxiety and move from panic to poise?

Courses are open to all singers and musicians and take place at Jackdaws in Great Elm, just 3 miles from Frome. Starting at 10am with welcome drinks and a chance to meet your Tutor and fellow participants, the tutored sessions take place from 10.30am to 4pm. We take a break for a delicious home cooked lunch at 1pm, which is included in the course fee of £45 (except Singing for All the Family, which has a different fee & format).

Vocal tutor Penny Jenkins makes a welcome return on Saturday 11 November for a favourite Jackdaws One Day Course – Singing for the over 50’s, with Accompanist Colin Hunt. Her course is aimed at singers of any ability, with no upper age limit! Come and discover that the singing voice can go on forever. This is a fun course for the over 50’s (or thereabouts), who are young at heart and want to learn to use their singing voice in a safe and nurturing way. Singing is a wonderful physical and social activity, which has been shown to have a positive effect on health and wellbeing. With Penny, you will rediscover your the joy that singing can bring, allowing you to make music for many years to come.

“I found the day to be most enjoyable and instructive. I thought that Penny had a wonderful manner with the participants”

Jackdaws Tutor Caroline RadcliffeOn Sunday 12 November we try something new as we invite all ages to join with Caroline Radcliffe, leader of the Jackdaws Songbirds Choir. Parents, bring your children. Children, bring your parents! At Singing for All the Family we’ll all sing together with Caroline to build a choir in a day! We’ll learn easy songs from near and far; from England and across the world, building harmonies and adding parts to each song to excite all ranges and abilities. Songs will be taught by ear: no need to read music, and no special singing ability required. The cost for Singing for All the family is £35 per group (2 adults & 2 children), lunch is not included for this course; bring your own packed lunch, and we’ll provide squash and hot drinks. Or pre-book a Home-made “Soup and a Sandwich” at £5 per head.

If you think you can’t sing a note, or are scared to sing on your own, or if you are always hiding at the back of the choir, a day with Jessica Walker at ‘Singing with Confidence‘ on Saturday 9 December, is a date for your diary.

Jessica will show you how you can start to become a more confident singer through the use of key breathing and vocal exercises. She will help you to gain a firmer foundation for your singing and encourage you to have the confidence to take the next step. The experienced Colin Hunt will be on hand as Accompanist.

“Jessica is a really great teacher, very encouraging and insightful about what individuals needed. I came away absolutely inspired and feeling I know what to focus on with my singing”

Jackdaws Tutor Chris StellAnother Jackdaws favourite, Chris Stell, will join us in Great Elm to teach the One Day Guitar Course on Sunday 10 December. Chris already leads the Guitar Ensemble weekend at Jackdaws each year with his duo partner Mark Eden, which is always oversubscribed. This One Day course is perfect for the strummer who wants to add to their skills, or the aspiring Spanish/classical player who would benefit from tips from the best in the business! Spend a few hours discovering the full range of the guitar by experimenting with classical style and techniques.

“I learnt a lot throughout the day, I particularly enjoyed the ensemble session”

Looking ahead to 2018, another new tutor brings another exciting new One Day course to Jackdaws. Wendy Skeen introduces her fascinating approach addressing performance anxieties in From Panic to Poise on Sunday 8 April 2018.

Many musicians experience anxiety about performing in public and either struggle through it or avoid performing altogether. If you are one of them, you’re in good company; Artur Rubinstein, Pablo Casals, Renée Fleming and Vladimir Horowitz (to name just a few) are reported to have struggled with it at various points in their careers. Even Frédéric Chopin disliked playing in front of large audiences.

Wendy’s One Day workshop will explore practical strategies – drawn from Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) in particular – that can help in managing performance anxiety. Our goal will be to find ways that help you move from ‘panic’ to ‘poise’, so that you can enjoy performing and sharing your music-making with others.

A full list of Jackdaws One Day Courses is available on our website. For further details, to discuss with us or to book a place, contact our office on music@jackdaws.org or by phone (01373 812383).

Jackdaws Big Sing returns!

Jackdaws Big Sing returns!

Jackdaws Big SingThis Wednesday (26 March) sees the return of the Jackdaws Big Sing at St John’s Church, Frome, 10am. Big Sing is a collaborative performance from pupils at school in Frome under the direction of Caroline Radcliffe, at the culmination of the Twilight Sessions series run by Jackdaws.

The children will be performing a selection of world music songs, selected for their ability to engage children with varied actions and develop their musical skills with easy to learn parts, layered to create interesting and continually varied textures.

During the Twilight Sesssions, Caroline works with school teachers to establish a plan for encouraging the use of singing in the classroom. A follow up school visit sees Caroline work with the teachers and children in the school setting to ensure they are working in a way which is as beneficial, inclusive and fun as possible.

The Big Sing is the final event in the Twilight programme and will feature the massed choirs of children from Mells, Nunney, St Louis and Leigh on Mendip schools singing together. This is not a performance as we might usually expect, as the children will not be singing ‘out’ towards the audience. Instead, they will be singing ‘inwards’ towards each other with the focus not on providing a spectacle for observers but on ensuring that the children work well as a team to create music in what might be their first such event. Parents of participating children are welcome to attend.

The news report from last year’s successful Big Sing can be read in our News Archive.

The Jackdaws Big Sing!

The Jackdaws Big Sing!

On Wednesday 5 June over 300 children filled St John’s Church in Frome with song!

As part of the Jackdaws “Big Sing” project, led by Caroline Radcliffe and Steph Douglas, four schools came together to perform and share the songs that they’d learnt.

Caroline and Steph initially met the teachers from Christ Church, Beckington, St John’s and Chewton Mendip schools at Jackdaws for two Training Sessions, the teachers then taught the songs to the children at their schools, with their renewed confidence and enthusiasm! Finally, everyone met for the “Big Sing”, guided by Caroline and Steph, singing songs from around the World in parts, rounds and harmonies, filling the space with sound. It was a marvellous morning of music!

The next Big Sing will be Wednesday 17th July 10am, St John’s Church Frome.

Report by Karolyn.
