The Cornish-born baritone, Richard Jackson, was a founder member of The Songmakers’ Almanac, visiting the USA, Hong Kong and the festivals of Edinburgh, Bath, and Aldeburgh with the group. He sang “Onegin” under Rostropovich, Menotti’s “Maria Golovin” directed by the composer; he was the original Christus in Jonathan Miller’s famous “St Matthew Passion” staging. He sang for ENO, Glyndebourne and Opera North. More recently, before retiring as a singer, he was associated with contemporary music performance, giving significant premieres at the Almeida Theatre, and appearing in Amsterdam, Warsaw and Mexico City.
He has taught both German and French Song at the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at Trinity Laban. He leads sessions at Morley College. Currently he visits both the RCM and GSMD. He is in demand as a leader of Master-classes – as far afield as Australia and Beijing. He taught at the AIMS (Eastbourne) and Cratoule (Provence) Summer Schools. As an adjudicator, Richard has served on the panel for the National Mozart Competition, and for the Kathleen Ferrier Awards. He has become an enthusiastic “regular” at Jackdaws.
