Planning a programme of song is like organising a good dinner party – menu and guests are arguably almost equally important. So I thought we might just juggle Orsino’s opening lines from Twelfth Night and use the result as our theme for this course. What about an Aperitif with Cole Porter’s The Oyster and Dankworth’s Bread and Butter; then perhaps Schubert’s Die Forelle or perhaps some Insalata Verdi; for the main course I turn to Rossini who, apart from giving his name to a posh way with fillet steak and writing lots of operas, also wrote some fun songs – check out Chanson du Bébé; for desert what could be better than Lime Jell-O Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise by William Bolcom ? And that’s only the food – when it comes to guests, the world’s your oyster!
