French piano music: the lighter alternative

with Julian Jacobson

Our piano repertoire tends to be centred on the great Austro-German classics, with the emotionally charged Russian composers adding further weight. French music offers us a delicious alternative, concentrating on charm, colour and poetic fantasy, and encouraging a personal response. It requires a light, sensitive touch, a feel for fluid phrasing and subtle, sensitive use of both pedals.

Bring one or more of your favourite French pieces and prepare to be guided towards a deeper understanding of how to play this enchanting repertoire!

Suggested composers: Fauré, Chabrier, Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Poulenc, Tailleferre, Milhaud, Messiaen.

As an alternative to a second French piece, you may bring a non-French piece requiring a similar approach and lightness of touch.

A £70 deposit is required to secure your place on this course. The balance of fees, including accommodation, is due 3 weeks before the course start date.
