The Romantic Piano

with Nicholas Walker

This advanced course explores the challenges of playing Romantic music. Romantic music is of course loved the world over, but sometimes the challenges of playing the actual notes gets in the way of the poetry of the music. Help is at hand! Among other things this course will explore the huge value of simplifications in enabling the player to understand and enjoy the meaning of the music, even before they have mastered the technical difficulties.

The Romantic period starts with composers such as Schubert and Weber, includes other great and well-known figures, such as Schumann, Chopin and Lizst, but it also stretches well into the 20th century: for instance Rachmaninov died in 1943, Medtner in 1951, Glière in 1956. Dohnanyi in 1960, John Ireland in 1962, so there’s lots to choose from.

As well as the usual suspects there’s a great deal of really first class Romantic music that is not so difficult: the whole of Europe waited for the next book of Lyric Pieces by Grieg, and there are lots of other composers who wrote such music, even Russians (who never write one note where 25,000 will do), such as Lyadov; you are welcome to bring some of that too. Of course IMSLP is tremendously helpful in sourcing items that are sadly out of print.

A £70 deposit is required to secure your place on this course. The balance of fees, including accommodation, is due 3 weeks before the course start date.
