Jane Austen is one of literature’s most enduring and beloved authors with wonderful characters in all of her stories. In this course, which celebrates 200 years since her death, we will explore any songs or arias that relate to these characters. Songs that explore class and social behaviors, courtship rituals and the complicated corners of the heart. Clever songs that reflect the author’s witty banter, ones with passionate cores for the emotional turmoil her heroines, and heroes, endure.
Or perhaps you would like to look at the music which Jane herself favoured. She played folk songs, Scotch and Irish airs (many arranged by Haydn and Beethoven), and songs from the popular stage by such composers as Dibdin, Arne and Shield. She also collected works from Piccinni, Sterkel, and J.C. Bach, and owned Steibelt’s Grand Concerto, Haydn’s English Canzonettas, glees music of John Wall Callcott, and Che Farò from Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice.
Repertoire suggestions can be made and there will be optional dressing up!
