Introduction to Klezmer

with Susi Evans, Szilvia Csaranko & Flora Curzon

Delve into the wonderful world of klezmer with Susi Evans (clarinet), Szilvia Csaranko (accordion) and Flora Curzon (violin) at the helm to inspire you to explore this celebratory, soulful and melodic music from 19th-century Jewish Eastern Europe.

This is a course for everyone who plays an instrument and wants to learn about klezmer music. We especially welcome musicians who are new to this genre, although you will need a good grasp of your instrument (around grade 5 as a rough guide but grades are not required) in order to participate. You will learn some great tunes and gain knowledge of the modes, ornamentation, rhythms and accompaniment that give klezmer its unique flavour. The course will mainly be taught using sheet music, but we will be encouraging learning by ear at a slow pace.

Preparation: for those wanting to get a grip of the style in advance, the tutors have published the Klezmer Playbook – a book of 50 traditional klezmer tunes with playalongs – which you can purchase here (You don’t need to buy the book in order to take part in the course).

A £50 deposit is required to secure your place on this course. The balance of fees, including accommodation, is due 3 weeks before the course start date.
