Piano Summer School at Jackdaws Riverside Retreat

Piano Summer School at Jackdaws Riverside Retreat

Mark TannerOffering the opportunity to use the longer time of three days, this hugely popular course provides you with the time and space to get a better understanding of the sprawling piano repertoire. This lively course will concentrate on repertoire, style, technique and practice methods. How to choose music for diploma, grade exams and skeleton score study, improvisation, duets and more will all be discussed. Mark is an experienced examiner and will provide support for those taking grade and diploma exams as well as those who just want to play for pleasure.

As in previous years, the course will have a maximum of 12 participants, which has proved to be an optimum figure – the perfect compromise between the needs of the individuals, repertoire already worked up for the purposes of scrutiny by Mark, and spontaneous group discussions, which are always as entertaining as they are enlightening.

Aim to bring along two or more pieces that show your playing in a good light – this can, having said that, constitute ‘work in progress’ – but consider carefully how your thirty-minute sessions might best be profitable to you.

Mark Tanner specialises in teaching advanced level pianists and is one of the West Country’s most revered teachers. Students wishing to take diploma or higher-grade examinations, or perhaps prepare for a recital etc., would benefit from joining his Piano Summer School at the peaceful riverside location of Jackdaws.

In recent times, Mark’s students have gained first and second prizes in national competitions. Several have gained their DIPABRSM, LRSM, LTCL and LLCM diplomas (indeed Mark is an international examiner of these diplomas for ABRSM) and have progressed to study at conservatoires and universities at home and abroad.

Since 2011 Mark has been a lecturer in piano and composition at University College Falmouth. His students tackle a variety of different programmes and enjoy a diverse range of musical styles. For many years he taught adult music appreciation courses and Piano Summer School at Jackdaws has become one of the landmarks of the year.

French Fin de Siecle music at Jackdaws

French Fin de Siecle music at Jackdaws

Versailles, c.1910 from cridb.com

In recent years, French repertoire of the Fin de Siècle has been brought back to popularity with new scholarship, editions, recordings and performances constantly appearing. Throughout the 19th century, Paris was the centre of culture in Europe; artists, musicians, authors, philosophers, poets and performers all congregated in the salons and coffee shops to debate and discuss new ideas until the early hours.

As the 1800s gave way to the 1900s, France was in La Belle Époque, the Golden Age, opening the Moulin Rouge and erecting the Eiffel Tower at the World Fair in 1889 before the Paris Metro system began operation during the year 1900. The Dreyfus Affair divided society and France boasted such influential figures as Alfred Cortot, Charles Baudelaire, Marcel Proust, Émile Zola, Jules Verne, architect Hector Guimard and organist Charles-Marie Widor all in their prime. It was the Third French Republic, the Second Industrial Revolution and a time of an explosion of -isms; impressionism, expressionism, romanticism, modernism, mysticism and decadence-ism!

Jackdaws Tutor Kenneth van Barthold, by Clive Barda

Despite the resurgence of music from this Golden era of history, many pianists still confess to feeling at sea in the genre. Kenneth van Barthold was entirely trained at the Paris Conservatoire where he spent four years in the piano class of Yves Nat, won a Première Mention in Solfège and studied Harmonie, Contrepoint d’Espèces and Fugue d’Ecole with Paule Maurice, Grand Prix de Rôme (as won by Maurice Ravel). Who better to guide you through the trials and turmoil of the times?

Running the same weekend of the Tour de France Grand Départ, Kenneth invites participants to bring any piece of music by a French composer of this era; Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Satie, Poulenc or any other. Bring anything which tempts you and we will go in search of that golden French sound!

Lauretta Bloomer joins Jackdaws

Jackdaws Tutor Lauretta Bloomer

Jackdaws Tutor Lauretta Bloomer

Join us in welcoming our newest tutor to Jackdaws – Lauretta Bloomer.

We are very excited to have Lauretta, who comes to us at the recommendation of experienced Jackdaws piano tutor James Lisney, and we are sure she is going to fit right in at her first course next month.

Lauretta comes from a very musical background:
Lauretta Bloomer studied piano with Yonty Solomon at the Royal College of Music in London and later in Vienna at the Hochschule für Muziek with Georg Ebert and Heinz Medjimorec where she was able to develop her knowledge and love for the music of the Viennese Schools and to specialise in chamber music. As soloist, chamber musician, and vocal accompanist, Lauretta has played concerts throughout Europe, toured the US and more recently performed in Asia and Australia.

Lauretta has been invited as a guest at many international music festivals and has a broad repertoire encompassing all periods and styles. She is equally at home playing on period instruments of performing contemporary music. Recent concerts and recordings include the complete songs of Clara Schumann, Pierrot Lunaire, Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet, Mendelssohn’s Piano Sextet and Quartets as well as works by Brett Dean, Kerry Turner, Luciano Berio and George Benjamin.
Lauretta is an experienced teacher. Besides her own teaching in Amsterdam, she has given lecture recitals in the UK & Europe, and has given master classes in the United States in chamber music and piano accompaniment.

Lauretta will lead her first weekend piano course at Jackdaws “Playing with Poise” from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 September

Art is a beautiful gift. What is more beautiful, than to clothe one’s feelings in sounds; what a comfort in sad hours, what a pleasure, what a wonderful feeling, to provide an hour of happiness to others. And what a sublime feeling to pursue art, so that one gives one’s life for it.” Clara Schumann.

These words reflect English born pianist Lauretta Bloomer’s own feelings towards music and the performing of it. This piano course is open to all who love playing the piano or those who are curious and would like to know more about it. We will work on fingering, correct use of the thumb, pedalling and posture, as well as tone production. The course will be divided into two parts with individual tuition and group participation, during which aspects of technique and musical interpretation will be covered. Participants will be encouraged to take turns to play pieces they are working on or would like to improve.

In a fun, relaxed and warmhearted atmosphere it is hoped that everyone will be inspired to take part and to learn from each other.

Summer Activities at Jackdaws

Jackdaws Summer Production Week; Monday 5 – Friday 9 August 2013.

Jackdaws Music Education Trust in Great Elm, near Frome will be hosting their popular activity week from Monday 5 to Friday 9 August this year, for children aged in School Year 4 and over. The Summer Production is always a fun, stimulating and exciting way to spend a week in the summer holidays, discovering how to create a show from scratch!

The project will be led by Jackdaws Artistic Director Saffron van Zwanenberg. Working with composer/conductor Will Carslake and artist/designer Georgie Tym, the team will create an original production from initial ideas through to a live performance for an audience of family and friends on the Friday. The children will be asked to consider three options pitched by each of the production team and then vote on which they think will make the best combination of music, plot and staging. Then the work begins! Assisted by the production team, the group will create the show over the course of the week and perform it on the Friday.

The Summer School runs from 9.30am-4.30pm every day except for Friday, which ends with the performance in the village hall at 5pm.

Jackdaws Summer School is open to all, with no experience required – just bring enthusiasm and energy! The cost of the week is £60 per place. For more information or to book a place, please call Jackdaws on 01373 812383 or email music@jackdaws.org.uk
