Richard Thomas enjoys a varied musical career, initially training as a trumpet player but subsequently specialising as a natural trumpet and cornetto player. These instruments have enabled Richard to perform with many of the leading period instrument ensembles, such as the English Baroque Soloists, Academy of Ancient Music, the Gabrieli Consort, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and also to work in theatre (Globe, Royal Opera House) and film (Shrek, Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots).
As well as performing Richard is a keen editor and has worked on original sources from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Much of this editing work has been for ensembles of which he is a founder member; QuintEssential, The City Musick and The Prince Regent’s Band. Away from performing Richard teaches at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the University of Birmingham and Anglia Ruskin University as well as a number of residential courses such as the Dartington International Summer School, the Historically Informed Summer School and Jackdaws.
