Jackdaws Strings Course Leader Nic FallowfieldNic Fallowfield has a long and distinguished career as violinist, conductor and teacher. On leaving Trinity College of Music in 1980 he accepted a post as co-principal 1st violin with the (now Royal) Northern Sinfonia. Since leaving to become free-lance in 1988 he has held posts as co-leader of the English String Orchestra (1988-1992), co-leader of Sinfonia Viva (1988-2019) and was leader of Orchestra of the Swan in its early years. He has been a guest leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Welsh Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Camerata amongst many others.

Nowadays his playing is almost exclusively as 1st violin of the Tedesca Quartet which he founded in 2010. The quartet has a busy concert schedule and is widely praised for its coaching activities, at Benslow Music in Hitchin and at Knuston Hall in Northants.

Nic was fortunate to have had as his first violin teacher Anne Macnaghten – a legendary figure in
the British musical scene who as founder (with the conductor Iris Lemare) of the Macnaghten concerts gave first performances for a host of young British composers including the young Benjamin Britten. Nic went on to study with the great Hungarian pedagogue Bela Katona.

After a period of intensive study with the renowned conductor George Hurst, Nic was invited to make his professional conducting debut with a series of concerts in Finland since when he has conducted orchestras in Greece, Austria and Romania. He is currently Musical Director of The Midland Sinfonia, a professional chamber orchestra based in Alvechurch. He is also conductor of the Beauchamp Sinfonietta and the Charnwood Orchestra and works with amateur orchestras throughout the country. Nic particularly enjoys working with youth orchestras: he has had a long and fruitful relationship with youth orchestras in North Wales and has recently been working with the Birmingham Schools Symphony Orchestra, including concerts at Symphony Hall in Birmingham.

For nearly thirty years Nic was a highly-respected violin teacher at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, a post he has recently given up in order to have more time in the week to pursue other activities.
