Headshot of Jackdaws Voice Leader Joan RodgersJoan Rodgers CBE studied singing at the Royal Northern College of Music after obtaining a BA in Russian from the University of Liverpool. She went on to make her international debut as Pamina at the Aix en Provence Festival. She is equally acclaimed in opera, concert and recital and has appeared in concert with conductors including Barenboim, Mehta, Harnoncourt, Solti, Mackerras, Ashkenazy, Salonen and Rattle. Her operatic engagements have taken her to Paris, Munich, Vienna, New York, Brussels, Amsterdam and Tokyo as well as all the major UK opera houses. She has appeared in recital in the UK, North America and Europe. Her many recordings include the three Mozart Da Ponte operas with Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Mackerras, Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony with Vernon Handley and the RLPO, Shostakovich songs with the Beaux Arts Trio and a Gramophone award winning recording of Britten’s Turn of the Screw with Daniel Harding. She has also made several solo recital discs including Russian song and the complete Wolf Morike songs with Roger Vignoles and Stefan Genz.

Joan received the Royal Philharmonic Society Award as Singer of the Year for 1997 and The Evening Standard Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera. She was awarded a CBE in 2001 and made an Honorary Doctor of Music by the University of Liverpool in 2005.
