For advanced singers and singing teachers, Joy’s course works on the voice, body and mind as she considers the philosophical needs of each singer. We will use your imagination and inherent musicality to sing with beauty, confidence and freedom and remembering, above all, to listen. After investigating the different possibilities for musical expression you can sing with the confidence that there is no opportunity which has been left unexplored.

Joy’s training is centred on the Bel Canto principles of beauty, quality, legato and freedom of voice, body and spirit; she believes singing to be the voice of the soul. Her teaching is built on the teaching of Frederick Husler, with whom she studied for nine years and who maintained that teaching is a relationship between pupil and teacher with respect and commitment on both sides.

Prepare two pieces from any area of the classical repertoire.

All courses are held at Jackdaws in the village of Great Elm, a small village to the west of Frome in Somerset, roughly 30 minutes drive from Bath. Frome Train station is roughly 2.5 miles from Jackdaws with direct trains from Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and London.

A £50 deposit is required to guarantee your place on a course. The total course fee is inclusive of all meals and tuition except breakfast, which is included in the separate B&B price. Please let us know of any dietary requirements at the time of booking and we will be happy to accommodate. Meals are lovingly prepared on site by our cooks using fresh, local ingredients where possible.

B&B rooms are located in friendly family homes and are either within walking distance or a short drive away (5 – 10 minutes). Breakfast is the only meal served at the accommodation; all other meals are provided on site at Jackdaws.
