Some of the most exciting and fresh repertoire in the 20th and 21st centuries – Art songs, spirituals and operatic operas – were written by American composers. Explore the works of well-known composers such as Barber, Copland, Bernstein and Charles Ives alongside lesser known composers – H.T. Burleigh, William Grant Still, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Amy Beach, Lee Hoiby, Gian Carlo Menotti, Ned Rorem, Jake Heggie, H. Leslie Adams and many others. Please prepare at least 3 – 4 American art songs (you may also prepare an operatic aria or spiritual). We will work on technique, interpretation and presentation of this unique area of the repertoire.If you would like help finding songs, suggestions can be offered.
