The 48 Preludes and Fugues present a deep insight into the temperament and compositional style of J.S.Bach. They are a microcosm of his usage of keys, different styles of writing and characterisation. They were written more than twenty years apart and, as happens with many of us, he became more complex with age.

This is surely the reason why, with few exceptions, all the really well known ones are in the first book. Please choose one from either book as there is some wonderful music in there. It would be great to hear a rarely played Prelude from Book 2 rather than a repeat a Book 1 that has been played to death! While it would be preferable to bring a particular Prelude and Fugue, better a prelude tidily learnt rather than both in a slightly chaotic state!
