"The first major success in my singing career was winning first prize at the Great Elm Vocal Awards and it gave me the confidence and encouragement needed at a critical time in my training. The competition is unique as it recognises potential alongside technical excellence and an overall polished performance, making it an invaluable stepping stone for singers at the start of their career. Not only was it a good experience, a useful platform and hugely encouraging, but the ethos of the competition is such that its main concern is not just for the singer's performance on the day but for their future progress. I was offered invaluable advice about appropriate repertoire choices that I have taken into account in every competition and audition since. The 'Great Elm Awards' was of inestimable value to my career and development and justly deserves its reputation as a competition with integrity that nurtures young talent."
Andrew won the Great Elm Vocal Awards in 1999, and also won the Lieder prize in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, 2005.
