Klezmer Music
24-26 March 2000
Valerie Hodges
Ability
A course in playing this exciting Yiddish dance music. (If
you are not sure what it sounds like, thinking of Hava Nagila might help.)
Previous experience of Klezmer is not necessary, but a reasonable degree of fluency (a
good Grade VI level on clarinet, violin, accordion, double bass or any other traditional
Klezmer instrument will be needed.
Valerie Hodges, clarinetist, although not
herself Jewish, has been playing Klezmer music for around ten years. With the
Klezmernauts, she performed in venues as diverse as Frome's Merlin Theatre and the Purcell
Room on London's South Bank, as well as Folk Festivals including Sidmouth and Chippenham.
She is currently a member of the Ensemble Kataklezmik, and it is hoped to hear this band
live - if not, she will at least bring their CD! |
