Sarah Francis is a Fellow of the Royal College of Music. She has given masterclasses at the Amsterdam, Moscow and Geneva Conservatoires, the Cologne Hochschule, the Royal Danish Academy and in Stockholm and Melbourne.
She started her career as principal oboe in the BBC Welsh Orchestra and has broadcast regularly as a soloist. Concertos have been dedicated to her by Gordon Crosse, William Matthias and Anthony Payne. Solo performances include Crosse’s ‘Ariadne’ in the Royal Albert Hall Proms, and Lutoslawski’s Concerto for oboe and harp, conducted by the composer in the Dartington International Summer School. She gave the first performance of the Howells Oboe Sonata in the Cheltenham Festival.
Her first solo recording was Britten’s ‘Six Metamorphoses’ which she studied with the composer and which he invited her to play at the Aldeburgh Festival. She has also recorded the Rutland Boughton oboe concerto with the RPO conducted by Vernon Handley.
